My Greek mother-in-law, who lived in America for several years, spoke only a few words of English: Thank you, good morning, good-bye, please. One broiling August day, she was struggling to open a can of soda with its still unfamiliar pop-tab. Just as she was giving up, help arrived in the form of the mailman. Mamma hurried to the front door and handed him the soda, asking him in Greek to open it for her and adding, "Please."
