Living in Greece, Part 14

Very Special Guests
Thursday, 30 September

Tonight we had the tremendous privilege of hosting four young Canadians for dinner and dessert. They were Konstantina,d her husband John, her brother Matthew, and his wife, Katherine. They’re all here studying theology (preceded by a year of Greek, which they’ve each finished).

They were all philosophy students, originally. They all taught English in Korea at one time and they’ve all lived in England, as well. (Can you tell they’re pretty close?) They’re all converts to Orthodox Christianity, as are Konstantina’s and Matthew’s mother and younger sister. These four came to the Holy Faith more or less together. They were all Anglicans immediately before that, although Konstantina and Matthew were raised Catholic. Both men were more or less on their way to ordination as Anglicans, John especially.

What can I say? Each one of them is an amazing person. Each of them is highly intelligent, each, very knowledgeable, and above all, each is the kind of Christian we all wish we were – and could be, and yes, can be!

There just is no way of describing time spent with people like these. How can we explain, for example, why sitting around discussing the meaning of “hypostasis” can make the spirit soar? It was a banquet for body, mind, emotions, and soul, a treat on every level.

Katherine and Matthew live quite near us, too, so we look forward to seeing more of all these people!

You know...our priest's son is in Thessaloniki studying Greek now but will study theology at the university after the first of the year there. He is has a scholarship...one of only 2 or 3 awarded in the US this year. He is just the most wonderful young man. Would be great if someday you could meet him.
