My husband has several Muslim colleagues at work. One of them, a woman named Shaheen, has been trying for years to convert him (a most amusing idea for anyone who knows Demetrios very well). Another, at lunch yesterday, mentioned how happy everybody had always been whenever they were under Islamic rule. This is the kind of "history" he had been taught - and he is a highly educated man, a physician.
Shocked may be too strong a word, but this man was quite surprised, at least, when Demetrios disabused him of that notion.

Bwahahahahahahahaha, I'm sorry, I literally snorted out loud when I read that.
Ay yi yi.
Yeah, but isn't it frightening.
Very funny! Then, of course, they'll proceed to ignore the history they're presented with and cling to their old myths. And these supposedly intelligent people have no problem with that.
It's certainly frightening, and very sad, as well. It's only making things worse.
This man is someone of goodwill and integrity. He will not ignore the history. He just didn't know it.
There seems to be an astounding lack of knowledge about events in their own history.....historical revisionism at its finest/worst.
How about the gate at the Patriarchate in Constantinople which has been sealed ever since the Ottomans hanged a Patriarch from it ?
And the numerous other Orthodox, martyred because they would not reject Christ ?
